America-phile – Life Across the Pond

Hello, hey, bonjour, ciao… alright?

I can’t believe that it’s been eight months
since I’ve written a post on here. Wowsers
trousers. A LOT has changed! As some of my friends and regular readers know in September 2009 I emigrated to the United States of America to marry my long term American girlfriend.

I’m going to catch you up on the things that I’ve been involved with and I provide you with ten tips and food for thought along the way. They’re not all focused on techniques for using humour in presentations. They’re  more goal setting and getting work oriented.

This blog has been offline ever since because, in the past, I have made some commission off affiliate products that I have promoted. In December 2009 new FTC rules came in to force stating that all bloggers and other affiliate marketers have to be explicit about the products that they promote to their readers. If you’re looking for a way to create a funny introductions about yourself for a presentation you should consider that you’re introduction is actually going to be made up of two parts. First of all you’ll have your pre-introduction and then you will have your introduction proper, this is something that I learned from the book Speech-Making and Presentations Made Easy by Dr. Max Atkinson. John Cleese Bemoans British Comedy

John Cleese recently reunited with the cast of Fawlty Towers in order to promote two documentaries about the sitcom which is now 30 years old. But he said that people wanting to learn to be a comedian or comedy writer didn’t put in as much hard work as they did back in the 1970s. He criticised the fact that there doesn’t seem to be a wealth of talent any more. Read the rest of this entry

World Laughter Day 2009

So this past Sunday was World Laughter Day. It it connected to laughter yoga, which you can read more about over at my post about the Science of Laughter. It’s the first Sunday of every May. Their website says:

“Laughter may be the best medicine, but how can we laugh at a time like this? Some people think that the tensions and conflicts in the world make it no laughing matter, but psychologist and author Steve Wilson, president of the World Laughter Tour, Inc., headquartered in Columbus, Ohio,  and those in the new laughter movement disagree”.

The idea is to get “the world to lighten up and laugh more”

Unfortunately I didn’t realise it was World Laughter Day until after the event. But luckily I managed to watch a comedy DVD on Sunday and have a good ol’ laugh anyway.

World Laughter Day seems mainly connected to laughter yoga, but I think that it might be worth expanding to include other disciplines and forms of generating laughter.

What do you think? Is World Laughter Day something that we should all embrace once a year?

Check out the World Laughter Day site.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you would’ve heard about Twitter.  Now, it seems, even live presenters aren’t immune from it’s charms.

Speaker Olivia Mitchell blogged about using Twitter in a presentation. She provides some very useful tips on harnessing the power of this new social communication tool… Read the rest of this entry
